Leeds Mayor David Miller Presents $500,000 Check to Leeds City Schools for Capital Improvements - Leeds Mayor David Miller presented a check for $500,000 on behalf of the City of Leeds to Leeds City Schools toward their upcoming construction project at Homer Smiles Field to renovate the facilities. This renovation will include a new field house, restrooms and concession stands.

”We have a small presentation, not too small! The Leeds Board of Education has decided to go forward with a major infrastructure Improvement program at the school that's going to benefit everybody in the City of Leeds and to participate in this the City of Leeds has authorized a check for $500,000 to go towards this project.

This was the culmination of an approval process to provide financial assistance to our school board and a project that they've undertaken to really upgrade the old facilities, the restrooms, the field house, all of the facilities that are ancient and in disrepair at our football stadium. The citizens deserve better than this. We have a wonderful program and the city council voted unanimously to provide half a million dollars in support of this project, which will actually start breaking ground before the end of this year. This is going to make a tremendous improvement to our facility there and we congratulate the Board of Education on having the foresight to get this project rolling,” said Mayor David Miller.

“You may have heard that we're constructing a new field house, restrooms and concession stands at Homer Smiles Field. As I have been so fortunate to say through the years, the city and the board over the last 15 years or so, we've invested 60 million dollars in academic facilities here in Leeds and this is the absolute last piece of old and tired and, I can tell you this taxpayers, you've got your money's worth out of the things that we are going to demolish. The number one complaint, the only complaint I ever get about facilities, is the restrooms at the stadium and they are the pits, so it's time! We're looking forward to getting out of the ground probably this fall. I had a meeting with the architect last week and he told us that. The architectural match with the middle school is going to fit in nicely and I think it's a project that everybody can be proud of. We’re also fixing the ditch after all these years. I understand it was a unanimous decision (with the Council) and I really appreciate that. I know there's a lot of places you could spend your money, but we appreciate you spending on the kids,” said Leeds City School Superintendent, John Moore.
